Give and Take

It's easy for people to say "Oh yeah, when it comes to a relationship I'll do half and expect my man/girl to do the other half." However, when the relationship starts all of a sudden that mentality theirs is gone with the wind...
Yeah sure, we can say that we believe a relationship should be give and take...but let's get real, a majority of us are self-centered and just want someone that will cater to us and always have our best interests at heart; yeah sure, we're willing to care about someone else's feelings but we tend to think about ourselves before anyone else.
It's SO easy for a person to get caught up and comfortable to the point where they expect those things rather than treat them as special things. If care isn't taken in a relationship, you can either end up being the giver and not the receiver or vice versa. I'm not going to tell you to stop worrying about yourself and shower your partner with attention and gifts or to stop caring about your partner and only worry about yourself; just realize that there should be an even balance...
You won't truly appreciate a gift unless you give one in return. A relationship won't be fully appreciated unless it's give and take, both people have to benefit from your love.
