Some people wax them, others pluck. Some thread, some shave them off and have them tattooed on (I know someone that did this!)…Whatever you decide to do doesn't matter, most of us do something to our eyebrows. And we should! Eyebrows help to shape and define your whole face. They open up your eye area, and lighten our overall facial expression. I always say that eyebrows make a huge difference to your face.
But they're kind of a pain to maintain as well. I'm constantly plucking, cutting, waxing, and shaving mine (I have thick eyebrows, don't judge me!).
So how do you keep them groomed if you do them at home yourself instead of having them professionally shaped and maintained? Simple! Check out these tips and tricks.
Get Some Good Tweezers
Tweezers are your friend. Invest in a good pair of tweezers with flat slanted ends. You should also have a lash comb, a good mirror (one that magnifies is ideal) as well as some manicure scissors to trim any stray hairs with.
Cut the Stragglers
You know those long rogue hairs you find standing straight up or sticking straight out? Get rid of those guys! Comb your eyebrows in the direction of the hair growth with a lash comb, and cut the longest hairs with a pair of manicure scissors. Keep in mind that the direction of hair growth may vary along the brow’s length.
Color On Your Face
Well, just use a light colored eye pencil or concealer to “highlight” where you need to tweeze to shape your brows. Make sure that the width doesn’t vary much along the length.
Starting at the bottom of the brow, start tweezing from the inside corner, working in the direction of the hair growth. If your natural arch is too sharp, pluck the hair above it to smooth the angle.
Check Your Work
It helps if you work on both eyebrows at the same time, taking turn on which eye you are plucking. Make sure to occasionally step back away from the mirror and examine them to ensure they are “like”..try to keep them symmetrical; however, don’t worry if they are not precisely the same shape—the two sides of a face are never identical!
Some common mistakes that occur when grooming your eyebrows:
Over Tweezing
We’ve all seen that lady with a pencil thin line of eyebrows…that my friends is what over tweezing looks like...or an African aunty (sorry, had to say it!) If you accidentally do this, try to grow everything back before you reach for your tweezers again or you might just make it worse.
Eyebrows Don’t Match Your Hair Color
If you dye your hair five or more shades lighter or darker, make sure to think about your eyebrows as well! Talk to your hairdresser about tinting or bleaching your eyebrows so that people don’t think “what’s wrong with this picture?” when they look at you.
Your Eyebrows Are Different Shapes
If you use a little hand held mirror and don’t take a few steps back to check yourself out in a big mirror, you just might end up with different shaped eyebrows. Always use a mirror that is big enough that you can see your entire face. If you mess them up, first try to correct it with an eyebrow pencil. If that doesn’t help, you could try to pluck the thicker eyebrow….just maybe ask a friend or your spouse for a little advice before you try to correct the mistake!
Do you groom your own eyebrows? Any special hints or tricks?

Thanks for the tips! I have been thinking about shelling out for a Tweezerman. I think it might be worth it, especially after using a crap tweezer for so long!!
